This is a section where I try to do justice to Levaillant’s major legacy of African bird names – a legacy ignored in Roberts and other major guides. In the Brenthurst volume, we listed more than 60 cases of birds where his names are still in common birding or scientific use – and there are many other cases where his contribution has probably been unfairly ignored – as in the case of the Amethyst Sunbird. This section will thus list the birds and go into some of the more intriguing and problematic cases.
